It was nippy, but sunny for Saturday's Veterans Day observance in downtown Effingham.

This year's observance was hosted by Effingham VFW Post #1769 and Gary Buehnerkemper served as emcee.

US Naval Reserves Lieutenant Commander and local businessman J.R. Elder served as guest speaker and focused on the American military presence throughout the world as a guardian of peace.

Prayers were offered by First Christian Church Pastor David McConnell, Patrick and Julie Zuber led in the National Anthem, Bob and Charlie McWhorter presented the colors, Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Copple led the firing squad and the St. Anthony High School Band under the direction of Christy Cyrus presented patriotic music and led in "Taps".

Members of the Effingham Elks Lodge were also on hand with their large American flag, and a good-sized crowd turned out for the event.
