Wheeler Man Injured in Ultralight Crash

An area man was injured in an ultralight aircraft crash in Jasper County Thursday evening.

State police report 86-year-old Arthur Michels of Wheeler was flying approximately 1-1/2 miles north of his residence when the aircraft lost engine power. The location is about four miles north of Wheeler.

Michels attempted to land and was reportedly about 20 feet above the ground when the aircraft spiraled down and crashed.

Michels was taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident.
