A special tree planting will occur Friday morning on the grounds of the historic 1872 Effingham County Courthouse.

The tree has been purchased by the Effingham County Museum as part of the Illinois State Historical Society's commemoration of  the bicentennial of Illinois statehood, an event that will occur on December 3, 2018.

The  ISHS is offering for sale Johnny Appleseed Trees, saplings grafted from the last known surviving tree planted by John Chapman, a.k.a. Johnny Appleseed. Only a limited number of these commemoratives are available for sale (one for each of Illinois' 102 counties, plus a few extras).

A special ceremony marking the planting of the three-feet-tall tree will take place at 10:30 a.m. at the courthouse square. Participating will be representatives from the County Board and the Museum.

The public is invited to attend.
