DuPont Pioneer Field Agronomist Eric Alinger needs just one word to describe this year's corn harvest: “variable.”

Alinger is based in southeastern Illinois and reported that field averages can fluctuate by as nearly 200 bushels within 20 to 40 miles.

“I don’t think I’ve ever seen such wide variation in yields so close in proximity,” he said.

Alinger said his customers in White, Gallatin and Saline counties are seeing record-breaking yields.

On the flip side, to the north, in Richland, Wayne and Clay counties, farmers are seeing field averages way below 100 bushels per acre.

“It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen,” Alinger added.
