Effingham Public Library reports that the Book Box, a repurposed vending machine that dispenses books and is housed at the Effingham County Office Building, has shared more than 5,000 books in its first year.

Created to increase opportunities to build literacy in the Effingham area, the Book Box is part of Effingham Public Library’s strategic plan to reach underserved populations. Funding for the Book Box was provided by an initial grant from Better World Books. The Book Box was officially installed at the County Office Building on Friday, September 23, 2016, and in its first year 5,033 free books have been dispensed. Maintained by the staff and volunteers at the Effingham Public Library, the Book Box dispenses a curated selection of donated books, completely free of charge.

“We’re excited to see the enthusiasm the community has shown for the Book Box. We’re pleased to be able to offerbooks in a place that is accessible to everyone. So a big thank you to the Effingham County Office Building for being our partner in making this project possible!” Amanda McKay, Library Director, shared.

Anyone is welcome to stop by the Effingham County Office Building east entrance and take a book from the Book Box. For further information go to the Library’s website at www.effinghamlibrary.org/bookbox/ or call the library at 217-342-2464 x1, email info@effinghamlibrary.org
