The trial of a Shelby County resident on charges of aggravated battery to his child has been delayed.

19-year-old Devan Porter of Cowden was to go on trial this month in connection with injuries to his 12-day-old child last fall. Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigators were requested by the Shelby County Sheriff's Department to investigate unexplained injuries to the infant. The child had been brought from his home in Cowden to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. The injuries were determined to be consistent with child abuse and the Illinois DCFS was contacted to assist in the investigation.

Porter and the child's mother, 21-year-old Kayla Girard of Cowden were arrested. Both subjects have been placed on $100,000 bond.

Girard is due to go on trial on October 16. Both Porter and Girarad are both due in court on September 29 for a hearing regarding travel expenses. Meanwhile, both suspects are facing child support claims filed against them by DCFS for the cost of caring for the infant.
