HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham broke ground Friday on its new Health Center that will house inpatient services and physician offices in one location for area residents.

Hospital officials say the Health Center will be connected to the current Effingham Medical Center located at 900 West Temple in Effingham to provide ease of access for physicians and patients.

Parking for patients and colleagues of the Effingham Medical Center tenants has now been relocated to the north side of the building. A new parking lot and north entrance were constructed as part of the first phase of construction for the new Health Center.

Theresa Rutherford, HSHS St. Anthony's President and CEO, shared, "This is truly an exciting time for St. Anthony's. The constuction of this Health Center will allow us to relocate several hospital outpatient services that are located within blocks of each other, to one centralized location and provide residents easy access to a variety of outpatient services. As health care continues to evolve more into an outpatient delivery model, this construction is being done for the convenience of those we serve and our physician partners."

Greg Sapp spoke with Theresa Rutherford after the groundbreaking ceremony...

Patients needing to come to the Effingham Medical Center should park in the new parking lot off of Medical Park Drive and come in the north entrance. This entrance will remain after construction is completed to provide increased accessibility to both the Effingham Medical Center and the new St. Anthony’s Health Center.

Construction of St. Anthony’s Health Center is projected to be complete in late 2018.

Hospital Sisters Health System President and CEO Mary Starmann-Harrison said, "This new center gives us a more patient-centered, practical approach in which to live our mission to reveal and embody Christ's healing love for all people through a health care ministry."

In addition to constructing the north parking lot and entrance in preparation for the new Health Center, a second phase of construction included infrastructure and life safety improvements to the Effingham Medical Center, such as a new fire alarm system and enclosing the center’s open stairway to improve the fire safety of the building. The second phase also included aesthetic changes of new flooring, new lighting, and painting the interior to make preparations to match the planned look of the new Health Center before its construction.

When complete, the Health Center allows St. Anthony’s to relocate several hospital outpatient services that are located within blocks of each other, to one centralized location and provide residents easy access to:

  • Convenient Care
  • Diagnostic Imaging, including X-ray, CT, and their Open MRI
  • Women’s Wellness Center with 3D Mammography, Stereotactic Breast Biopsy and Boutique
  • Laboratory Specimen Collection
