K-Bowl in Effingham is closing later this month, leaving generations of bowlers with plenty of memories.

Entrepreneur Chuck Keller Friday said the bowling alley will close sometime in the middle of the month. Keller said John and Lisa Wortman are purchasing the location but said he would remain involved. He said he hopes to have more information soon on how the property will be utilized.

An enterprise known as KAO...Keller, Adkins and Osthoff...opened the bowling alley on September 8, 1961. Sterling and Lucy Adkins operated the K-Bowl for many years. Originally a 16-lane operation, the K-Bowl later expanded to 32 lanes. There was league bowling every weeknight, some nights on every lane, and open bowling at other times.

Times change, though, and Keller said things are at a point where, along the interstate, a bowling alley doesn't produce revenue that some other developments could. He thinks it will be better for Effingham when the closing occurs and the new development is in place.
