July Jobless Rate in Effingham County at 3.7%

The July jobless rate in Effingham County was at 3.7%. That's down from 4.5% in July 2016.

The rate is also slightly lower than the 3.8% rate for June.

Labor Market conditions continued to gradually improve in summer 2017 throughout South Central Illinois. Seventeen of eighteen counties reported a decline in unemployment compared to one year ago. The data is not seasonally adjusted.

Employment gains were reported in Retail Trade, Construction, and Leisure-Hospitality this summer. Over the year, employment increases were reported in Manufacturing, Retail Trade, Professional-Business Services, and Health Services in South Central Illinois. State and Local Government payrolls steadily declined during the past year.

Numerous employment opportunities were available in Health Care, Sales, Transportation, and Office and Administrative Support in summer 2017. Many job openings were advertised in Engineering, Management, Food Preparation, and Production occupations. Workers were needed in Health Care Support, Installation, Maintenance, and Repair, Computer, and Business-Finance. Some outdoor jobs were available in Construction and Building and Grounds Maintenance.

Area counties and their July jobless rates:

Coles--5.4%, down from 6.4% in July 2016

Cumberland--4.0%, down from 4.9%

Shelby--4.4%, down from 5.4%

Clay--5.3%, down from 6.4%

Fayette--5.6%, down from 6.2%

Jasper--5.0%, down from 6.3%
