Effingham Man Dies While Working on Car

An Effingham man has died while working on a vehicle. Authorities say the vehicle fell on the man.

Coles County Coroner Ed Schniers said that 48-year-old Michael Slaughter was working beneath a vehicle at his uncle's home on Moultrie Avenue in Mattoon Wednesday night when the car fell on him. Schniers said he was notified of the incident at 1:10am Thursday after Slaughter's uncle found him.

Schniers said an autopsy is scheduled Thursday afternoon to determine the exact cause of death.

Bauer Funeral Home in Effingham will handle funeral arrangements for Michael Slaughter.
