The City of Effingham’s Tourism Office, the Effingham Fire Department and the city Emergency Management Agency have teamed up to help the community experience the total solar eclipse in Effingham on Monday, August 21. They've purchased total solar eclipse glasses, with the help of Ameren.

A total solar eclipse occurs when the new moon comes between the sun and the Earth and casts the darkest part of its shadow on Earth. A full solar eclipse, known as totality, is almost as dark as night. The total phase of the eclipse will be not visible in Effingham, but it can be observed here as a partial solar eclipse, which will still be a spectacular sight. The solar eclipse enters Illinois at 1:17 p.m. and leaves at 1:25 p.m. The best time to view in Effingham will be at 1:21 p.m. Everyone is encouraged to view this eclipse with the proper eyewear.

The City of Effingham's Tourism Office, the Effingham Fire Department and the City of Effingham's Emergency Management Agency are postponing the distribution of the glasses until the following events:

-- August 11: Our Town: Best of Effingham Downtown Party in downtown Effingham from 4-8 p.m.

-- August 15: City Hall Selfie Day at Effingham City Hall from 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
