Lori Winter, RN, MSN, Infection Preventionist at HSHS St. Anthony’s Memorial Hospital, recently was awarded the 2017 Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) Education Scholarship Award. For receiving this award, Winter received a trip to Portland to attend the APIC 2017 Annual National Infection Prevention Conference in Portland, Oregon held June 13-16. The award was sponsored by Sealed Air Diversey Care, an international vendor of cleaning and hygiene products and platinum sponsor of the APIC conference.

To win this award, Winter was one of 400 people who submitted a project for consideration. Her project, “Infection Prevention, Your Hands Have It: Patient Driven Hand Hygiene Culture Change,” was one of 34 out of the 400 projects who were named winners. Project submission came from all over the world, with four physicians also winning the award – one from India, two from Turkey, and one from Iran. The topics of the projects ranged from Hand Hygiene, C.diff, Isolation Practices, Nursing Communication, and Surgical Site Infections, just to name a few.

The APIC Annual Conference is one of the most comprehensive infection prevention conferences in the world, with more than 90 educational sessions and workshops led by experts from across the globe and attended by nearly 4,000 professionals. The conference aims to provide infection preventionists, physicians, researchers, epidemiologists, educators, administrators, and medical technologists with strategies that can be implemented immediately to improve prevention programs and make health care safer.
