An investigation is continuing into a report that water from Landfill 33 ran into a creek.

The incident occurred over Memorial Day weekend.

Landfill 33 Operations Manager Brian Hayes said someone went onto the landfill property and "vandalized" the electrical system. Hayes said "whether it was intentional or random", the action "caused a tank to overflow" resulting in the water running off into the creek. Hayes said they've had the system for 20 years and never had a problem. He said when they they left on Saturday, May 27, "it was working fine". When the problem was discovered, Hayes said they cleaned it up and they've had no problem since then.

In the June 30 edition of Outdoor News, a list of actions by Conservation Police included an entry concerning a "fish kill' that occurred near the landfill. The report said a conservation officer observed "numerous small fish dead in a creek downstream from the landfill". The report said a conservation officer observed a "toxic" liquid pouring out the landfill into the creek.

An investigation into the incident is continuing. The investigation has not determined that the liquid was toxic. The EPA official investigating the case will not be back in her office until Monday, and we hope to learn more about the matter then.
