Fire damaged an Altamont area business Monday morning.

Altamont firefighters were called to Illinois Prefinish on 450th Street around 9:15am.  The business prefinishes wood so a number of chemicals were stored inside the business as well as a quantity of wood.

The owner of the business, Aaron Cox, said he switched on a conveyor and noticed the fire, which quickly spread throughout the building.  While fighting the fire in the one building, firefighters poured water on a building immediately south to keep it from being involved.

The building in which the fire originated suffered significant damage.  The cause of the fire is still being determined.  No one was injured.

Fire companies from Tri-County at Beecher City as well as Shumway and St. Elmo assisted Altamont crews with fighting the fire.  Altamont police and Effingham County sheriff's deputies assisted with traffic control.
