We've been notified by 911 in Effingham County that Verizon Wireless customers are encountering delays in having their 911 calls completed.

911 officials say the calls are taking 20 to 30 seconds to be completed, which can seem like an eternity when you're phoning with an emergency, and said that the calls are ringing on the telecommunicators' non-emergency phone lines, so the telecommunicators don't necessarily know whether they're receiving a 911 call.

Verizon Wireless crews and local service providers are working on the situation and hope to have it corrected shortly.
