A cow was on the loose in Effingham for about an hour Tuesday morning. He has been corraled.

The cow and his mother were at Walton and Haarmann Veterinary Clinic when the cow escaped out a door and headed north. The cow ended up near Community Park in the fenced backyard of a home at 603 East Kentucky Avenue.

The bovine remained stationary in the backyard as staff from Walton and Haarmann arrived along with city police. A staffer with Effingham County Animal Control came to the scene and fired a tranquilizer dart into the hindquarters of the cow. The big boy, estimated at 1300 to 1400 pounds, went down a couple of times when the tranquilizer started to take effect, but the Walton and Haarmann crew got him back on his hooves long enough to lead him into a stock trailer for the trip back to the vet's.

A portion of a fence at the home where the animal was corraled and a portion of a patio at a neighboring house were damaged, but no one was injured.
