The retail clothing chain rue 21 is closing about a third of its stores across the country, including those in Effingham, Centralia, and Mt. Vernon.

rue 21 in a Facebook post said the closures were difficult but necessary. In all, the company is closing about 400 of its 1,100 stores. The store's website says the impacted stores are starting store-closing sales.

The company has released a statement indicating as part of their ongoing business transformation into a more cost efficient operator, they are closing unprofitable stores across their fleet in order to focus on their many hundreds of highly profitable locations. The company notes the exact number and timing of the closings will be determined in the coming weeks.

The rue 21 store in Effingham is located in Oak Point Centre. The rue 21 store in Centralia is located in the Fairview Shopping Center. The Mt. Vernon location is in Times Square Mall.
