Authorities Wednesday completed an investigation into threats written on the wall of a bathroom stall at Newton Community High School.

Jasper County State's Attorney Chad Miller said officers with the Illinois State Police and the Newton Police Department worked with high school principal Beth Probst and Jasper Unit Superintendent Andrew Johnson to identify a suspected student. The student was removed from the high school and faces future legal proceedings under the Illinois Juvenile Court Act.

Miller said the threats were directed at another student, who was identified and briefed by law enforcement officers. He said State Police and Newton police will "have increased intervention at Newton Community High School over the next several days" as they finalize their investigation.

Miller said, "The safety of our children is something we take very seriously. I commend the Newton Community High School and Superintendent Johnson for addressing the matter professionally and quickly. The Newton Police Department and Illinois State Police worked diligently together to resolve the matter."

Miller said he was happy to have the investigation resolved so students "can go back to business as usual."
