Severe storms overnight knocked out electrical service to a wide area in and around Effingham.

Norris Electric Cooperative says the high winds accompanying the storms knocked out service at their Summit, Funkhouser and Lake Sara substations. That interrupted electrical service to areas in and around Altamont, Casey, Effingham, Shumway and Toledo.

Service was interrupted between 1am and 2am. Service was restored to much of the affected area shortly before 8am. Norris officials say the wide area affected resulted in lengthier repair times.

During the storms, a tornado warning was issued in Fayette County and there were severe thunderstorm warnings issued in Shelby and Cumberland counties.
