The St. Anthony High School WYSE team won first place at Regionals for the 300 Division on February 3. They will advance to the WYSE Sectionals, which will be held at Eastern Illinois University on March 9.

The regional WYSE (Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering) Academic Challenge was held at Lake Land College where 25 high schools, including St. Anthony High School, gathered to compete for the regional title.

The WYSE Academic Challenge is a competitive series of tests that are created and administered by Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering. The tests are offered to top-performing high school students in both Illinois and Missouri.

The tests are written by a collection of college and university faculty focusing on the subjects of physics, mathematics, engineering graphics, computer science, chemistry, biology, and English. Students can compete individually and as part of a team.

Schools competing in the Academic Challenge competition are divided into four divisions based on enrollment – unlimited (schools over 1,500), Division 1,500 (schools 701-1,500), Division 700 (schools 301-700) and Division 300 (schools with 300 or fewer students).

St. Anthony High School WYSE team members include: Andy Saba, Kristin Slaughter, Gillian Erickson, Alex Beesley, Ethan Rozene, Maryann Saba, Jack Nuxoll, Rachel Wortman, Grace Zeller, Lexi Mendella, John Hartke, Drew Gibson, Aidan Bailey, Olivia Clausius, and Augie Heal.

St. Anthony team members garnered 14 Top Three finishes in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, and English.
