State Representative David Reis (R-Ste. Marie) was named as an Assistant House Republican Leader this week by House Republican Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs).

Reis, who has represented a large section of southeastern Illinois in the  House since taking office in 2005, says he is honored to receive the Leadership post at this critical point in the history of the State of Illinois.

“I’m very grateful to have the trust of Leader Durkin and my colleagues in the House. I consider it an honor to serve in a House Leadership position. Most important in my mind though, is that the residents of my district will have their voice heard on major issues facing the state. Southern Illinois will have a seat at the negotiating table while we work to resolve our budgetary issues,” Reis said.

“David Reis is a strong voice for southern Illinois families,” Leader Durkin said. “David has always fought for the priorities and values of his constituents. He’s a leader on agricultural and energy issues at the State Capitol and I am pleased to have him on my leadership team.”

Representative Reis currently serves as a member of the Governor’s Education Funding Reform Commission and as a member of the Downstate Sportsman’s Caucus. He says the opportunity to serve in House leadership will provide a greater platform for promoting issues that are important to the residents of southern Illinois.

“In my role as Assistant Republican Leader, I will focus on promoting energy exploration and dealing with our transportation and budgetary needs in southern Illinois,” Reis said.  “We’ve made some gains for our energy industry through fracking regulations and I was part of the effort to pass a capital projects bill to help with infrastructure needs. There is a lot of work to do to address our budget deficit and the current impasse, and I want to ensure southern Illinois has a say in what happens going forward.”

David and his wife Maria reside on their family farm in rural Ste. Marie where the Reis’ have farmed for over 150 years. They have two children, Nicholas and Adriana.
