Effingham Mayor Jeff Bloemker is working for the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Bloemker is the CEO over Illinois Corrections Industries and reports to Department of Corrections Director John Baldwin. He said by phone Tuesday that his experience working with human relations and with various aspects of production led to his interest in the post.

Illinois Corrections Industries produces a variety of manufactured goods that are used in State facilities, but is also made available commercially. Bloemker said the goal is to reduce the prison population, and making the inmates productive citizens is a way to see that accomplished.

The mayor said he wants to remain the mayor, but is commuting to Springfield from Effingham. He said he hasn't missed a Tuesday City Council meeting, and doesn't plan to start now. He said his availability in Effingham will be lessened, but will be available on Tuesdays and will make himself available on Saturday mornings for civic activities.

Bloemker formerly headed Heartland Human Services, and has been involved in other commercial ventures in the Effingham community. He said he began his duties with the Department of Corrections a couple of weeks ago.
