Retired Lake Land College President Scott Lensink died Monday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 58.

Lensink worked for Lake Land for 20 years. He was first hired by the college in 1993 as a business instructor and as head coach of the Lady Lakers basketball team. Lensink had worked at Eastern Illinois University prior to his hiring at Lake Land.

Lensink served as Lake Land President for six years prior to his retirement in 2013. During his tenure, Lake Land College emerged as a national leader in the sustainability field, attracting grants and attention from public officials from coast to coast. In addition, the college received prestgious Aspen Institute recognition, which named Lake Land among the Top 10 percent of community colleges in the nation. The college also was named the safety campus in Illinois.

Internally, Lensink led the college community in the creation of a new vision and values and a strategic plan.
