Ron Heltsley is the new chairman of the Jasper County Board.

Heltsley was chosen as chairman during the reorganizational meeting of the Board following the November election.

Heltsley was nominated for the chairman's post, along with Brian Leffler. Heltsley won election on a 7-5 vote. Leffler was then unanimously chosen as vice-chairman. The officers will each serve two-year terms.

Judge Dan Hartigan swore in five Board members...Ron Swick, A.C. Pickens, Mike Hall, Doug Weddell and Gary Michl. Jason Warfel, who was also elected to a new term, was sworn in earlier. Also sworn in at the reorganizational meeting Thursday was County Coroner Jason Meyer.

When it came time to adopt the policies of the previous board, Heltsley asked to change that, but State's Attorney Chad Miller said it was necessary to adopt the existing policies so there would be guidelines in place, and then work to change any policies at the Board's regular monthly meeting.

The Board also voted to approve a new contract with the Jasper County Sheriff's Department union. The seven holdover Board members voted on the measure since it was developed under the previous Board's watch.

It was also agreed to close the Jasper County Office Building and Jasper County Courthouse from noon to 1:30pm on December 12 for a Christmas lunch for staff members.
