Two men are recovering from injuries they received in an altercation in Shumway late Monday night.

The injured men are 37-year-old Christopher Mahnke of Cowden and 48-year-old Jeffrey Klein of Shumway. Effingham County Sheriff's Department reports both men were severely injured during the fight.

Just before midnight Monday night, Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to 304 E. Beecher Street in Shumway regarding a fight between two men. At the scene, deputies located Klein, who was injured in the incident. Klein's injuries required he be transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Christopher Mahnke was later taken into custody by the Shelbyville Police Department. Due to the extent of his injuries, Mahnke was also transported to Carle.

Mahnke was later released from the hospital, but upon his release, he was arrested on an Illinois Department of Corrections warrant for a parole violation.

The Sheriff's Department indicated both men are expected to recover from their injuries. The preliminary investigation of the incident revealed the two men had been fighting with each other.

Detectives with the Sheriff's Department are continuing to investigate the case and will be referring their findings to the Effingham County State's Attorney's Office. This being an active investigation, the Sheriff's Office is releasing no other information at this time.
