An elderly St. Elmo man was injured in a two-vehicle crash that tied up traffic on the south end of Altamont Monday afternoon.

Altamont Police Chief Alan Heiens said 94-year-old Leo Haslett was injured in the crash that occurred when Haslett pulled onto Main Street from the frontage road into the path of a vehicle driven by 22-year-old Rachel Tillman of Altamont. In the resulting collision, Haslett's van overturned onto the passenger side.

Haslett had to be extricated from the van and was airlifted from the scene to HSHS St. John's Hospital in Springfield. Tillman was not injured.

Haslett will be cited for failure to yield. The crash occurred at 2:30pm.

Altamont police, Effingham County Sheriff's Department, Illinois State Police, Air Evac, Effingham and Altamont firefighters and Altamont Ambulance Service all assisted at the scene.
