The parents of a Shelby County infant have been arrested on counts of aggravated battery to a child.

20-year-old Kayla N. Girard and 19-year-old Devan B.N. Porter were arrested Wednesday.

Illinois State Police Zone 5 Investigators were requested by the Shelby County Sheriff's Office on November 1 to investigate unexplained injuries to a 12-day-old infant from Cowden that had been brought into HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. Authorities say the injuries were determined to be consistent with child abuse and the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services was contacted to assist in the investigation.

Girard and Porter were taken to Shelby County Jail in Shelbyville where they are being held under $100,000 bond.
