Fire destroyed a workshop located on the Greuel Dairy Farm Tuesday afternoon. Sigel Fire Department Chief Troy Althoff said the cause of the blaze is undetermined, but the workshop was a total loss.
Chief Althoff said the potential existed for the fire to be much worse than it was, due to 2 large diesel tanks that sat very close to two sides of the shop. Althoff said when firefighters arrived, the hoses on the diesel tanks had melted, but his crew was able to get water to them before the tanks exploded.
Sigel, Montrose and Shumway Fire Departments responded to the scene, and tanker trucks shuttled water from a hydrant located near Green Creek. Teutopolis and Neoga Fire Departments monitored Sigel, Shumway and Montrose stations in their absence.
Dean Greuel, owner of the dairy farm, was several miles away when he learned of the fire, telling us this was his workshop, containing welding equipment, a tractor and several other items. The cost of the contents are unknown.
