(THE WORSHIP GROUP)

A group of local citizens is planning a prayer and worship service at The Cross at the Crossroads on Sunday, October 23, from 3 – 4:00pm. The Cross at the Crossroads is located at 1900 Pike Ave in Effingham. The multi-denominational event is open to everyone, with speakers from several area churches. All are welcome to attend. No seating is available at the outdoor event, but attendees are welcome to bring lawn chairs.

The group’s intent for the event is to gather as a community to pray and worship before the coming election. They wish to remind the community that God is in control, no matter the outcome of the election, and to unify community members to pray in the midst of a polarizing election season. The event does not endorse or support any candidate or party. It is solely to bring together believers during a time of tension in the world.

Event planners Jessica Wright, Christy Hohenbary, Sarah Forbes, Nancy Ervin and Amanda Emmerich came up with the idea for Worship at The Cross after attending Worship Night in America in July. Christian music artist Chris Tomlin headlined the event which featured other musical acts and speakers, Louie Giglio and Max Lucado. After attending, the group knew they wanted to offer an event like it to the local community.

Amanda Emmerich commented, “We appreciated the wonderful music and gifted speakers at the event; they had a big impact on us. One of the best moments came when everyone at the Sears Center knelt together in prayer for our community, our country and our world. Right away, we knew this was something special that we wanted to share with our community.”

Christy Hohenbary agreed, “We believe this is something our community, and our world are in need of, to come together in prayer. It is an especially stressful time in our country with the coming election, and we need to refocus on God’s strength and the power of prayer. We are excited to see how this event will bless our community.”

The event planners chose a Bible verse to focus on for the day, “In a world of uncertainty and turmoil, let us gather as a community for a time of worship and prayer. Let us fix our eyes on God, our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).”
