Today is the first day to circulate nominating petitions for candidates for election to local school boards and community college boards.

Three seats on the Effingham Unit 40 School Board will be filled in the April 4, 2017 consolidated election. Those seats are now held by Chris Koester of Summit Township, Brian Wick of Summit Township, and Steve Bone of Douglas Township.

Koester has been serving on the Board in recent months after being appointed to fill a vacancy created when Laurie Borrelli moved out of the district.

Due to restrictions on Board member residency and the residences of the other four Unit 40 board members, two Board seats can be filled from Douglas, Watson, Summit and Mason Townships, and three seats could be filled by candidates from any other township.

Candidate petition forms are available at the County Clerk's office, or may be downloaded from the State Board of Elections website.

To be eligible to serve, a school board member must be, on the date of the election, a citizen of the United States, at least 18 years old, a registered voter, and a resident of the State of Illinois and the school district for at least one year immediately preceding the election.

The period for filing nominating papers runs from December 12 through December 19.

There are also three seats to be filled in the April 4 election on the Lake Land College Board of Trustees. Those are now held by Doris Reynolds, Dr. Robert Luther and Mike Sullivan, all of Mattoon, but will be filled by a districtwide election. Nominating petitions are available through the office of Lake Land College Executive Assistant Jean Anne Grunloh on campus in Mattoon.
