The Effingham County Sheriff's Department is advising the public of possible home repair scams that could be setting up shop in and around the county.

County Sheriff Dave Mahon said he has received information there are several groups from out-of-state staying in Effingham county with a goal of performing home repair fraud and rip-off schemes for two to three days locally. Their target is trusting elderly residents.

The Sheriff's Office shared that a negotiated agreement between two private parties is a civil matter. If you agree to pay a certain price for a certain job, it's not a law enforcement issue if you paid too much.

Sheriff Mahon stated, "Although we live in a great community, please know that there are people out there willing to take advantage of others if they can. Please keep an eye on elderly relatives and neighbors. We are fortunate to live in a small community and this may for once be a benefit, knowing your neighbors' business."

Anyone with questions is free to contact the Sheriff's Department at 342-2101.
