Two requests for variances were granted Tuesday by the Effingham City Zoning Board of Appeals.

One request was filed by Jason Vahling, who sought a reduction in a sideyard setback for property at 911 West Edgar. Vahling plans to build a duplex on the parcel, which is south across the street from West Side School.

The other request was filed by the Hawickhorst Family Land Trust, and Co-Trustees Cathy Bierman and Cindy Hoene. The trust was seeking a variance in height for a feed mill. South Central FS is purchasing the property at 3401 South Banker and wants to build the feed mill.

The property is in proximity to Effingham County Memorial Airport, but City Engineer Jeremy Heuerman said the location of the feed mill on the southwest part of the property is outside the flight path for the airport's runways. FAA approval is also needed for the project before it can proceed, and a request for approval has been filed with the agency.
