Cumberland County authorities are awaiting the results of forensic work before deciding how to proceed in the shooting death of Mattoon resident Eric Lavaly.

The 22-year-old Lavaly was fatally wounded by a gunshot at a home in Greenup on July 20. Another Mattoon man, 23-year-old LaMont Mimms, was charged with a count of possession of weapon by a felon in relation to Lavaly's death. Mimms is being held in Champaign County, where he was located after the incident, awaiting a decision on other charges. Mimms' bond was set at $500,000.

Another individual at the house, 21-year-old Kyle Covault of Indianapolis, was wounded by a gunshot during the incident.

Cumberland County State's Attorney Jonathan Braden Wednesday said several pieces of evidence have been sent to the State Crime Lab for forensic studies. Braden said once the results of the tests are back, he'll decide on charging information in the case. He hopes the test results will be back in the next week or two.
