Jasper School Board Ready for New School Year

Jasper school board members are ready for the new school year after action at Thursday night's meeting.

The Board:

--approved a tentative budget for the new fiscal year with adoption at the September meeting

--agreed to declare seven school buses as surplus, and heard from Chris Parr that the number of bus routes has been reduced from 24 to 21

--voted to raise the substitute teacher pay to $90

--agreed to have the CEO instructor continue her services for the Jasper CEO for the new school year

--learned that enrollment is at 1,324 students, one more than last year at the start of the school year

--heard from Superintendent Andy Johnson on his work to develop a procedure regarding facility usage that would meet liability concerns

--accepted a donation of $11,979 from the Jasper Unit PTO for the purchase of 33 laptops for a mobile lab at Newton Elementary School

The Jasper board also acted on several personnel matters related to the start of the new school year. The Board:

--accepted the resignation of Rick Athey as a Newton Elementary School teacher

--approved the resignation of Alicia Haberlin as high school English teacher

--approved the resignation of Kathy Angle as machine operator at the high school

--okayed the transfer of Darla Mahaffey from high school teacher's aide to half-time PE teacher and half-time teacher's aide at Ste. Marie Elementary School

--employed Jessica Warfel as part-time bus driver

--hired David Lee as special education bus driver

--employed Becky Johnson as special education bus chaperone

--hired Angie Homann as teacher's aide at Ste. Marie Elementary School

--hired Karen Kerner as teacher's aide at Newton Elementary School

--employed Jordan Michels as Newton Elementary School PE teacher, Jasper County Junior High assistant boys basketball coach, and Jasper County Junior High assistant track coach

--hired Whitney Ritchhart as Jasper County Junior High girls basketball assistant coach

--approved a maternity leave for Operations and Maintenance and Transportation Secretary Stacey Goebel

--approved Kent Schafer as football volunteer coach and Sarah Will as high school volleyball volunteer coach.

The Board also approved adjusting the salaries of Bill Sanguinetti, Daniel Stark and Janet Benefiel so the District will be in compliance with new federal wage and hour guidelines that take effect in December, and granted Johnson authority to fill vacancies through the end of this school year with the understanding that the Board will be kept informed.
