Area Award Winners at Illinois State Fair

SPRINGFIELD, IL. - The best of the best in Illinois agriculture were celebrated on Saturday at the Illinois State Fair.  The naming of the 2016 Illinois State Fair Grand Champions was held before packed crowd in the Coliseum.    

Among the day's big winners were a brother and sister from Kankakee County.  The goats shown by Dylan and Tara Hommel were awarded four of the night's top honors.   Dylan, 14, received Grand Champion Meat Goat and Grand Champion Land of Lincoln Meat Goat, while his sister Tara, 12, was named Reserve Grand Champion Meat Goat and Reserve Grand Champion Land of Lincoln Meat Goat.

Vying for the coveted Jr. Grand Champion title is something that all "show kids" work for all summer. The Jr. Grand Champion title was not the only title up for grabs, the Reserve Grand Champion, Grand Champion Land of Lincoln, and Reserve Grand Champion Land of Lincoln livestock were also selected.  

The Grand Champion and Grand Champion Land of Lincoln livestock will be sold Tuesday, August 16that 4pm in the Coliseum at the Governor's Sale of Champions. Proceeds from the sale go to the individual exhibitors and towards youth in agriculture, including 4-H and FFA.   

Fairgoers are invited to stop by and walk through the "Hall of Champions" in barn 25Q located on Central Ave.
