Mike Schutzbach has announced plans to retire as Effingham Police Chief. The announcement was shared at Tuesday night's Effingham City Council meeting.

The resignation is as of August 30.

Schutzbach has served as police chief since 2003 and has been with the Effingham Police Department since 1986. He was a candidate for Effingham County Sheriff in 2014.

There is no word yet on who will succeed Schutzbach as police chief.

The move comes as the City Council is discussing whether to build a police station adjacent to City Hall in place of the department's current facility.
