The area is forecast to experience heat indices ranging from 105 to 115 in the latter part of this week.

The City of Effingham Emergency Management Agency is encouraging residents to take precautions while working or participating in recreational activities outdoors.

The City EMA encourages residents to:

--stay hydrated by drinking at least 1-1/2 to two quarts of fluids daily

--avoid alcoholic beverages and drinks containing caffeine

--avoid overexertion and strenuous outdoor activities if possible

--check on elderly family and friends

--make sure pets have extra water and, if outside, a shaded area

--if you or someone around you begins to experience dizziness, headache, confusion and a rapid pulse, seek medical attention immediately, as these could be symptoms of heatstroke.
