Investigators were unable to determine the exact cause of a fatal house fire in Greenup earlier this month.

A report from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office states that the cause of the fire is officially undetermined. A spokesman for the Fire Marshal's Office indicated that the extent of the damage done by the fire made it impossible to determine its cause.

The report indicates that it's also unclear whether the point of origin of the fire was a window air-conditioning unit in a bedroom or the electrical outlet it was plugged into.

The fire the evening of July 2 resulted in the deaths of 60-year-old Darrell Albert and 28-year-old Timothy Thomas. Both men lived in the house. Thomas' wife was Albert's niece. The rest of the family was outside, but Albert was inside when the fire was noticed. Thomas went into the house in an attempt to rescue Albert, but both men were killed in the fire.
