Jobless Numbers Out for May

Effingham County's unemployment rate in May was a respectable 4.6%, but that number is up from one year earlier.

The May 2015 rate was 4.4%.

Illinois Department of Employment Security Director Jeff Mays said some metro areas saw job growth, but many did not. Businesses added jobs in seven metro areas, but lost jobs in the other seven metro areas. Those areas that added jobs were in northern Illinois.

As far as other area counties, Shelby County's jobless rate was at 5.7% in May, up from 5.3% one year earlier; Cumberland County was at 5.4%, up from 4.6%; Clay County at 7.2%, up from 6.2%; Fayette County at 6.2%, up from 5.8%; and Jasper County at 6.2%, up from 5.6%.

The state jobless rate in May was at 5.6%, while the national jobless rate was at 4.5%.

Increased employment was seen in education and health services; retail trade; leisure and hospitality; and transportation, warehousing and utilities.
