A runner was struck by a semi in Richland County Monday morning.

The incident happened along US 50 on the east edge of Olney about 7:20am.

Illinois State Police say that three runners attempted to cross the highway and the first two made it across safely, but the third runner, a 16-year-old boy whose name was not released due to his age, was struck by the rig. The driver of the semi, 48-year-old Anthony Hinterscher of Noble and another uninvolved motorist said Hinterscher swerved in an attempt to avoid striking the boy.

The injured runner was taken to Richland Memorial Hospital in Olney before being transferred for additional treatment to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.

Hinterscher was cited by police for the brakes on his rig being out of adjustment.
