An Altamont man was killed in a crash on Interstate 70 near St. Elmo Thursday morning.

State police report a car driven by 40-year-old Jeffrey Beck of Altamont was stopped in traffic on the interstate about a mile west of St. Elmo just before 5:30am. A van driven by 22-year-old Joshua Willis of Mansfield, Ohio struck Beck's car from behind, forcing the car into the rear of a semi-trailer stopped ahead of Beck.

Fayette County Coroner Bruce Bowen pronounced Beck dead at the scene. The driver of the semi, 45-year-old William Daume of Canton, Texas was injured in the crash as was his passenger, 53-year-old Bobbi Gibbs of Pauls Valley, Oklahoma. They were treated at the scene and then released.

Willis was injured as was his passenger, 46-year-old Jack Rudolph, Sr. of Mansfield, Ohio. Both were taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham and then were transferred to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana.

Willis was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
