Memorial Day Events Scheduled

The Effingham Memorial Day observance is scheduled for Monday, May 30 at the Veterans Memorial in Oakridge Cemetery.

This year's ceremony will be hosted by Disabled American Veterans Chapter 7 and Ladies Auxiliary of Effingham. The ceremony will begin at 10:30am. An additional ceremony will immediately follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

DAV Commander Dave Althoff will serve as Master of Ceremonies. Gold Star Mothers Gertrude Kenter, Lynn Donaldson and Kathy Sayne will be recognized, and Father Chris Brey of St. Anthony, Sacred Heart and St. Mary's of Shumway Parishes will offer the invocation.

A National Guard contingent under the direction of Tyler Koester will raise the colors, and Pat and Julie Zuber will lead in the singing of the National Anthem.

Wreaths are to be presented by DAV Chapter 7 and Auxiliary, Effingham American Legion Post #120 and Auxiliary, Theodore Hoffman VFW Post #1769 and Auxiliary, Amvets Post #40, Effingham County Marine Corps League, Teutopolis American Legion Post #924, 40 et 8 Voiture #1439, and the Effingham Elks Lodge will present their large American flag.

The St. Anthony High School band under the direction of Christy Cyrus will present a patriotic selection, while the guest speaker will be VAC Service Officer Mike Beck.

Father Brey will deliver the benediction, followed by a 21-gun salute led by Sergeant-at-Arms Bill Copple. Ben Rudolphi will play "Taps".

A meal will follow the ceremonies in the DAV Club Room.
