The Effingham County Bar Association handed out its annual Distinguished Service Award Thursday at the annual Elks Law Day Luncheon in Effingham.

This year, the legal group presented the award posthumously, to the late Jan Westendorf, who was a legal secretary and paralegal in Effingham for 39 years. Westendorf's family was on hand to receive the award from Westendorf's boss and friend, local attorney Twila Orr.

Orr said Westendorf was representative of all of those who work behind the scenes to get things done.

Keynote speaker at the luncheon was local surgeon Dr. Nash Naam. A native of Egypt, who is now an American physician, Dr. Naam spoke of thankfulness for the privilege of US citizenship. Naam's presentation included a timely illustration of the US Supreme Court's Miranda vs. Arizona decision, the case being saluted this spring by the American Bar Association on its 50th anniversary.
