Local attorney Christopher Koester has been selected to fill the vacancy on the Effingham Unit 40 Board of Education. The decision came at a special noon hour meeting Tuesday.

Koester was selected from 13 candidates. Four finalists were interviewed before the Board made its selection.

Board member Carol Ruffner said, "All the applicants we had were good. It was a tough decision."

Koester will serve until the Spring 2017 election, when he will be free to seek election to his own term.

Koester fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Laurie King Borrelli, who moved out of the district.

The Unit 40 board also expelled one student through the first semester of the 2016-17 school year and referred the student to an alternative education setting, and placed one student on Principal Probation through the first semester of the 2016-17 school year.

Board member Todd Schaefer was not present for the meeting.
