Four Injured in Crash at Banker and Fayette

Four people were injured in a collision at Banker and Fayette Tuesday afternoon.

Effingham city police report a vehicle driven by 92-year-old Melvin Higgs of Effingham turned in front of, and was struck by, a vehicle driven by 46-year-old Timothy P. Koester of Effingham. As a result of the impact, Koester's vehicle left the roadway and struck and damaged a retaining wall at First Baptist Church.

Both Higgs and Koester, as well as two passengers in Higgs' vehicle, 87-year-old Mary Higgs and 83-year-old Hilda Shumaker, both of Effingham, were all injured. Melvin Higgs and Shumaker declined treatment. Koester and Mary Higgs were each taken by ambulance to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham.

Melvin Higgs was cited for failure to yield.
