(THOSE GATHERED AT MONDAY NIGHT'S EDUCATIONAL INFORMATION MEETING IN ALTAMONT)

Altamont Superintendent Jeff Fritchtnitch a group of about 40 school district residents Monday night that it's time for citizens to let their legislators know their lack of activity on proper school funding is not acceptable.

Fritchtnitch said the combination of pro-rating payments by the State to local school districts and the Altamont board's decisions to keep making a full spectrum of course offerings and electives available has led the district to perilous times when it comes to fund balances. Now, the lack of a K-12 budget for the coming school year has led the superintendent to speculate as to whether the district should open the school doors this fall.

Fritchtnitch said the pro-rating by the State has gone on for years, while the district has eaten into its reserves to maintain programs.. He thinks citizens should consider participating in an education rally at the State Capitol in early June, and "apply the next level of pressure".

No one in Springfield escaped blame, but House Speaker Michael Madigan was invoked more than once as a major source of the problem. Fritchtnitch noted it was ironic that while neighboring school district South Central has to wait years for promised funding for school building renovations, then has to either put the brakes on their high school project or utilize their own funds to finish a grade school project, Madigan funneled money through the Secretary of State's budget to provide funds for construction of a grade school in his district.

Those gathered were encouraged to write down questions they had on paper provided and stuff the questions in a box at the door as they left. For those unable to attend, Fritchtnitch asked those with questions to contact him at the Unit office and he will find a time to meet with them on their concerns.

Here's Greg Sapp's interview with Jeff Fritchtnitch following Monday night's Altamont education forum...
