All Effingham, St. Anthony, and Teutopolis graduating high school seniors who have faced some sort of adversity and have maintained at least a 2.5 cumulative GPA are eligible to apply for the Andrew Gobczynski Big Heart Foundation Memorial Scholarship.

This scholarship is given in memory of Andrew Gobczynski, a Class of 2000 Teutopolis High School graduate, who went on to play basketball at Eastern Illinois University. At Teutopolis High School, Andrew played for Coach Ken Crawford, and Andrew’s basketball teams made two state tournament appearances. During the Illinois State Championship in 2000, Andrew earned All-State honors. He also earned a full athletic scholarship to Eastern Illinois University, where he played basketball for four years under Coach Rick Samuels. In 2001, Andrew’s EIU team made the NCAA Basketball Tournament. He was a captain his senior year. While competing in athletics, Andrew underwent numerous knee surgeries in order to continue playing the sport he loved. The Andrew Gobczynski Big Heart Foundation was established in order to provide resources for those who face adversity in our local community. The Andrew Gobczynski Big Heart Foundation offers this annual scholarship so that they can help those who are struggling with adversity in different ways.

Applicants must write a 500-word essay describing an adversity they have overcome in their lives. Winners will be selected based on the essay’s content and mechanics. Applications must be in MLA format with applicants’ complete contact information at the bottom of the essay. The winners will be selected by the Andrew Gobczynski Big Heart Foundation Board Members. The deadline for application is Monday, May 2 at 3:30.
