Effingham Fire Chief Joseph Holomy has successfully completed the process for being re-designated a Chief Fire Officer. The Commission met on February 2 to officially confer the re-designation of Chief Holomy who is 1 of only 1,113 worldwide to hold this designation.

Chief Holomy was first conferred the designation in February 2004 and has since been re-designated in 2007, 2010, 2013 and now 2016. Seven components of measurement for original designation included Experience, Education, Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Association Membership, Community Involvement, and Technical Competencies. To maintain the designation, Chief Holomy had to show continued development under the standards of Chief Fire Officer in four areas; Professional Development, Professional Contributions, Active Association Membership, and Community Involvement.

A Board of Review consisting of members of the fire and emergency services profession, academia, and municipal agencies review each individual and recommends successful candidates for designation.

Chief Holomy has been Chief of Effingham FD since November 2004 and has been in the fire service for 40 years this year starting as a volunteer in 1976 in the south suburbs of Chicago.
