Fire did significant damage to Sunrise Apartments on South 9th Street in Mattoon overnight.

Mattoon firefighters were called to the scene at 10:11pm Wednesday. Arriving crews found fire and smoke coming from the northwest corner of Building D on the third floor. Fire crews were able to make entry and made their way to a third floor apartment. Crews were met with thick black smoke in the third floor hallway prior to entering the apartment. Once inside the apartment, the majority of the fire was located in the northwest bedroom, but the fire had also vented itself through a window.

The fire caused heavy damage in the bedroom and throughout the apartment. Smoke and water damage also resulted throughout the third floor apartments, and the apartment below the fire-damaged unit. Two apartments ended up being uninhabitable. Red Cross was called in to assist those tenants in finding a place to stay.

The cause of the fire is still being determined. One person was taken to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center for treatment. Firefighters cleared the scene at 12:15am today.
