A car and SUV collided on I-70 near Montrose over the weekend.

The crash happened at 3:35pm Sunday in the eastbound lanes just before the Montrose interchange.

Illinois State Police report the car driven by 44-year-old John Burton of Camby, Indiana slowed and stopped due to a traffic backup. The SUV driven by 18-year-old Alex Johnson of Lampe, Missouri rear-ended the Burton vehicle, with both units coming to a stop in the median.

Burton's passengers, 18-year-old Marissa Burton and a 12-year-old girl, both from Camby, Indiana, were injured and were taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.

Johnson was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
